Office 2010 beta open publicly

Microsoft Office 2010 BetaAfter launching of Windows 7, now Microsoft is unleashing another beta product for testing i.e. Microsoft Office 2010. The Office 2010 beta will feature everything minus the online version, which is currently being tested within Microsoft.

Somewhat surprising for a public beta, the Office 2010 beta offers everything in the office suite so it has Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook and all those other programs most people don’t know how to use like OneNote, Access and Publisher. Office 2010 apps still feature the “ribbon” UI found in Office 2007, but it has been changed somewhat. In terms of entirely new features, Outlook will be able to be linked to social networking sites. Wow! That’s awesome feature. First offered is Windows Live (obviously) and LinkedIn will be added sometime early next year. There is also the aforementioned online version, which will be paired with the new SkyDrive feature to give users 25 GB to store and sync their office documents.

Office 2010 is said to have improved interaction with Windows 7 and its taskbar, which makes sense. That doesn’t mean other users can’t download the beta, it’s free for anyone using Windows XP SP3 and later. With the forthcoming Starter edition which is said to be free for new computers, maybe Microsoft will be able to increase usage of the newest version of Office. Outside of a work environment, or after buying a new PC, users seem to not upgrade their office suite very often. For example, the .docx file format still hasn’t really achieved full support from users, with some just ending up confused.

HP Officejet J6480

The HP Officejet J6480 is relatively large (18.7 inches wide by 18.6 inches deep) and heavy (16.87 pounds), but it manages to keep a low profile by standing only 10 inches high. The large footprint plus the fact that the trays dont fold into the body mean you probably wont move it around the office very often. However, the combination of matte white and gray panels and the glossy black cockpit should blend well with the rest of your decor.

At first glance, it seems that the J6480 has a lot going on, but the buttons are organized in such a way that makes navigation fairly easy. The front panel houses a series of shortcuts for the scanner, the printer, the copier, and the fax machine, with the numerical keypad and faxing buttons occupying half of the console.

Theres also a small, two line LCD screen to quickly access system preferences and tools to maintain ink cartridges and the printer nozzle, but there are only three auto dials for the fax machine most AIOs have at least four, if not eight one touch buttons. The front panel also has an external card reader (supporting xD, Memory Stick, SD, and CompactFlash) and a wireless On/Off button.

Unfortunately, the J6480 does not have a PictBridge port for transferring images directly from a digital camera.

We understand the redundancy in including both a media bay and a PictBridge port, but PictBridge is quickly becoming the de facto standard for direct printing, and we wish HP would have considered this in the printers design.

The 250 sheet input tray has an adjustable arm to fit any paper size we like that the tray is actually fixed into the machine and made of a sturdy plastic, as opposed to other printers that employ a flimsy tray to corral paper.

The printer also has an auto document feeder for scanning and or copying as many as 35 sheets at a time, as well as an auto duplexer for double sided printing, accessible through the driver settings. Finally, HP rounds out the device with built in wireless 802.11g networking. We followed the on screen instructions and successfully paired the J6480 with our desktop computer in less than 10 minutes.

From there, we connected satellite computers to the printer by simply installing the driver onto the other desktops. The process of setting up a wireless network with your printer is typically painful, requiring special network configurations and system changes, but the J6480 slowly guides you through the setup with on screen instructions that we found easy to follow and troubleshoot.

In addition to the drivers, the J6480 also ships with HPs Photosmart Essential and Solution Center software. The former allows you to import, organize, edit, and share your digital photos, while the latter helps you fax and scan documents as well as order additional supplies to use with your printer.

The J6480 has a two cartridge bay with one single black cartridge ($15) and another tricolor cartridge ($18) for color prints. We ran low on color ink during our testing, so we suggest that you purchase the XL cartridge thats available on the HP Web site for $35. Theyre double the price of the standard cartridge but offer three times the page yields in both black and color.

Motorola Droid Verizon Wireless

Officially announced on October 28 and set for a November 6 release, Motorola Droid (Verizon Wireless) delivers on much of the hype. The display is gorgeous, the Android 2.0 updates are excellent, and the handset is lightning fast, particularly for an Android phone. Well refrain from using the dreaded "iPhone killer" expression, but comparisons between the two devices are obvious, and we see the Droid as a real competitor to Apples device.

On the downside, Motorola werent crazy about the keyboard and dial-pad accessibility, the calendars arent fully integrated, and wed prefer to see dual mode (GSM or CDMA) capability. But for Verizons first pass at Android, Motorola Droid (Verizon Wireless) more than delivers. And even better, its a clear departure from Verizons locked down past. At US$199, Motorola Droid (Verizon Wireless) is on par with T-Mobiles Android device, but its slightly more expensive than Sprints devices.

At first glance, you might not think Motorola Droid (Verizon Wireless)s design amounts to much. Its build is rather dull and the sharp angles result in a boxy look. But this is a smartphone with a lot of surprises, the biggest being the positively gorgeous WVGA display. At 3.7 inches, it surpasses even the iPhone and is firmly in the bounds of what we consider to be an acceptable size for a touch screen display. Color support is generous (16 million hues) and the resolution (440x854 pixels) is some of the richest weve seen.

We arent kidding when we say that this display is bright and brilliant with vibrant colors and sharp graphics. It also lends itself well to the welcome Android 2.0 interface updates (more on that later). The capacitive displays touch interface is quick and responsive and we love the added multi touch capability. As with previous Android phones, theres vibrating feedback only for certain functions (like a "long press"), though you can turn off the haptic feedback completely if you desire. When we selected items and scrolled through long lists, there was no lag time in performing the command (more on that later, as well).

You also can customize the displays brightness, backlighting time, and animations. The accelerometer will adjust the displays orientation as you rotate Motorola Droid (Verizon Wireless) in your hands, but you can turn this feature off. Outside of the upgrades from Android 2.0 and Motorola Droid (Verizon Wireless) specific tweaks, the basic interface will be familiar to Android users. You get only three home screens we prefer the five we got on the Motorola Cliq but you can customize each pane with widgets. And, of course, the central pane has the Google search bar. The main menu is accessible via the pull tab at the bottom of the display. The menus design is mostly unchanged. You can move icons around and add shortcuts and folders.

Google Genome project Continues world domination

Google logoGoogle has continues to invest in projects other than what advertisements to post when someone searches for LOLcats by throwing the weight of it’s giant stacks of cash at Harvard’s George Church.

Dr Church plans to spend $1 billion to tie DNA information to each person’s health history in an attempt to create a database for finding new medicines. His credentials are high as he helped develop the first direct genomic sequencing method in 1984.

It’s good to see the heavyweights of the tech industry to contribute to the overall science community. American science has been suffering in the last few years even as interest in technology has been on the upswing and this type of investment can only help in the long term. Unfortunately, share holders are only willing to go along with these kinds of investments for so long before they get antsy.

Samsung DuoCam SC D6040

Though the performance of both camera and camcorder are less than youd get from dedicated devices in this price range, the Samsung DuoCam SC-D6040 is an attractive option if all in one convenience is your No. 1 priority. Samsungs first DuoCam, the SC-D5000, was an odd looking, bulky affair with a pivoting dual lens mechanism that would have fit in perfectly in the old Transformers cartoon.

The dark gray, plastic shell of the Samsung DuoCam SC-D6040 on the other hand, resembles, at first glance, a typical midsize DV camcorder.

Only the presence of the second lens at the front of the camera gives away the fact that the SC-D6040 isnt a typical camcorder.

Like Ray Milland and Rosie Greer in The Thing with Two Heads, the camera and camcorder share a body but are different in many ways.

For example, while the still camera lens features a convenient, built in lens cover, the camcorder lens has a separate, tethered lens cap. The camera has a solid, hefty feel, likely because Samsung has, essentially, added the components of a digital camera to a compact DV camcorder chassis. Though it has a sturdy feel, at 1.2 pounds, its no heavier than typical middle size camcorders.

The still cameras controls are easy to use, but expect confused looks if you ask a stranger to take a picture for you and you hand them what looks like a camcorder. When examining the controls, the only hint of the SC-D6040s dual functionality is a dedicated still camera style mode dial for selecting the shooting mode when using the still camera functions.

The remaining photo settings, such as flash mode and automatic exposure lock, are doubled up onto the camcorder buttons. The buttons are logically laid out, with the most common functions on the sides of the camera and playback controls behind the LCD screens door. The zoom, start or stop, and still photo buttons are all comfortably placed for one handed operation.

Samsung Behold SGH T919

The Samsung Beholds candy bar design resembles previous touch screen phones like the Omnia and the Dare. Below the prominent touch screen are the few physical controls the camera lens sits on the phones rear face. Its not terribly unique, but it is slick and eye catching. You can get it in two colors (espresso or rose), but the features are the same on both models.

At 4.12 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep, the Behold is almost the same size as the Dare, but is a bit smaller than the Omnia. And at 4 ounces, it falls just between the two in weight. We liked the comfortable, sturdy feel in the hand and the way it slips easily into a bag and a larger pocket when youre on the go. The 3 inch display doesnt offer the biggest touch screen around, but were glad that Samsung took full advantage of the Beholds real estate.

With support for 262,000 colors (240x400 pixels), it is bright and beautiful, with vibrant colors and sharp graphics. You can change the brightness, the back lighting time, and the font type. You also can change the intensity of the vibrating feedback. The touch interface is responsive and intuitive in many ways the internal menus are not unlike the Instinct. We had no issues with misdials or pressing the wrong button, but if you have problems, you can adjust the calibration.

Thumbing through long lists presented few problems as well. As on the iPhone, the Behold has a sensor that dims its display automatically when you raise the phone to your ear during a conversation. The Behold also has an accelerometer that will change the displays orientation as you rotate the phone. On the bottom of the display youll notice four icons for the phone dialer, the phone book, the Web browser, and the main menu.

The phone dialer features large, alphanumeric buttons with readable numbers and text. Youll also find shortcuts for voice mail, the call log, the messaging menu, and the phone book. An on screen "back" button will let you correct mistakes when dialing. Like the Omnia, the Behold features Samsungs new TouchWiz user interface, which allows for an extra level of personalization on your Home screen.

On the left side of the display there is a bar with a series of "widgets" for applications like the clock, music player, photo gallery, calendar Bluetooth, Web browser, and notepad. By tapping the widgets, you get one touch access to the corresponding feature. Thats handy by itself, but the TouchWiz goes a step further. If you slide certain widgets from the bar to the home screen, you can get a miniature view of that feature.

So for example, if you slide the music player widget over, a tiny version of the player will appear right on the home screen. You then can play tunes without opening the main menu. To end the application, simply slide the widget back onto the bar. You also can close the bar, by touching the small arrow icon in its middle.

Python 2 5 thanks for the good times

Python 2.5 has a special place in the heart of any Google App Engine developer, as it was the first runtime we launched way back in 2008. Since then, both Python and App Engine have advanced a great deal.

A year ago we announced our support for Python 2.7, which brings syntactic and semantic improvements to the language and includes powerful features like threading and a large selection of third-party libraries.

Not only does Python 2.7 make developers’ lives easier, the runtime is extremely cost-effective. Our customers have taken advantage of features like concurrent requests to reduce their front-end instance costs by more than 70% while handling the same amount of traffic.

Not surprisingly, the Python 2.7 runtime has proven to be extremely popular. Just over a year after launch, more than 78% of active Python applications on App Engine are using the new runtime, and more are being added every minute.

As both Python and App Engine evolve, we must occasionally make hard choices about which legacy runtimes we should continue to support. Today we are announcing the deprecation of the Python 2.5 runtime. The deprecation period will follow the guidelines set in our terms of service.

What does this mean?

  • We will continue to run Python 2.5 applications throughout the deprecation period. For most customers, upgrading to Python 2.7 is trivial as most elements of Python 2.5 are forwards-compatible with Python 2.7. We’ve prepared a handy migration guide that covers the steps to migrate in detail.

  • If your application is still using the already deprecated Master/Slave Datastore, then you should first plan the migration to our more reliable High Replication Datastore, as the Master/Slave Datastore is not accessible from Python 2.7.

  • Future versions of the App Engine Python Development SDK will display warnings to developers deploying updates to a deprecated runtime.

  • Starting from January 2014, we will no longer allow new applications to be created using the Python 2.5 runtime.

We encourage all developers using Python 2.5 to consider migrating as soon as possible. We’re confident that the vast majority of our customers will find the upgrade straightforward and the benefits substantial.

If you’re considering migrating, here are some useful resources:

If you have any questions about this deprecation, we encourage you to contact us at google-appengine-python25-deprecation@googlegroups.com.

The Bureau XCOM Declassified Review

It delivers some enjoyable stretches of shooting action, but The Bureau: XCOM Declassified too often transforms the series signature tension into tedium.

The Good

  • Great period atmosphere
  • The basic third-person shooting is enjoyable
  • Certain plot developments shake up the proceedings.

The Bad

  • Squad management on the battlefield gets tedious
  • Laborious storytelling
  • Fails to capture the tension of the XCOM series.
A shooter based on a beloved strategy franchise? Its the kind of idea that makes strategy fans nervous, but games like Command & Conquer: Renegade have proven that the possibility isnt meritless. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is not a great argument for an XCOM spin-off, however. It often puts its best foot forward, but while The Bureau mimics some of its inspirations touchstones, it doesnt re-create their impact. The result is a third-person cover shooter that is decent fun but ultimately rings hollow.

What the Bureau nails is its retro-futuristic atmosphere, which channels an early-1960s view of the world straight from a Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog. Protagonist William Carter looks as if he leapt from a postcard or periodical advert from the era: his hair is shellacked to perfection, and a heavy turtleneck sets off his freshly shaven face. Environments look slightly yellowed in the way we often imagine the 1960s, given how photographs fade over time. Sectoids--alien mainstays in the XCOM universe--have the big bulbous heads and skeletal bodies of the extraterrestrials you might have seen described in Amazing Stories magazine. This was the era of famous alien abductees Betty and Barney Hill, whose descriptions of bald-headed, gray-skinned invaders fueled generations worth of pop-culture depictions of men from outer space. The Bureau looks like a Hill hypnosis session come to life.

The Bureaus structure somewhat resembles that of a typical XCOM strategy game. You spend some of your time in XCOM headquarters, getting updates on recent global events, before heading into the field and confronting the alien threat the planet faces. And this being an XCOM game, you dont just go it alone but rather take two squadmates with you and issue them specific orders: take cover over there, call in an airstrike, target this enemy, and so forth. Carter and his squadmates all level up, earning new abilities and improving old ones as they go, by way of The Bureaus skill trees. At first, youre only healing fellow squaddies, ordering them to boost you with stims and perform critical strikes on outsiders and laser turrets. In time, however, youre pulling healing drones out of thin air and temporarily convincing foes to become friends.
Youre not stuck with the same two squadmates, but can hire and choose from a variety of them. You can also rename them and customize their physical appearance, which youd think would keep The Bureau in step with its strategic siblings. But this is one area in which the shooter copies elements of the series, but cannot capture its essence. In 2012s XCOM: Enemy Unknown, your connection with your squad was closely tied to the tension built into every move. Losing a squadmate was devastating not just because you had named her after your girlfriend, but because she played a valuable role on the battlefield--and because you invested a lot of time and mental energy into each element of the skirmish in which you lost her.
Unfortunately, The Bureau doesnt...Read the rest of this post ---->

You can post your public buzz simply by speaking it. From the Google Mobile App for iPhone or Quick Search Box on Android, select the voice search icon, say "post buzz" followed by the text youd like to post, and watch your words appear. Before your post is sent, youll be able to edit it or change its tagged location.

2. Filter the Nearby tab for a specific place.
From the Nearby tab, you can easily filter buzz by a specific place, such as a sushi restaurant youre about to walk by, to only see posts from that place. Open the menu showing nearby places, for example "Tartine Bakery and 20+ other locations nearby," and then select a specific place from the list. Now, youll see all the public buzz anyones ever posted from that place or you can quickly create a post that is tagged with the place. To go back, just open the same menu and select your current location shown with the blue dot. Youll once again see all the recently posted buzz around your location.

3. Search!
As youd expect from any Google product, Google Buzz for mobile has a powerful search feature that lets you search all public buzz for topics that interest you. Open the menu or just select the magnifying glass icon to see the search bar. You can also search specifically for nearby posts by checking the "Search nearby" box before submitting your search (its already checked if youre in the Nearby tab). Now you can find out what people around you are saying about the closest pizza spot or a traffic jam.

4. Post from your city-level location.
Tagging a post with your location is easy and adds context to your buzz posts. Sometimes, your post isnt about a specific place or youd rather not share your exact location. You can easily show your city-level location, so your post has a general city location tagged and will be browsable in the Nearby view and Maps Buzz layer. When posting, just select the ">" in the location box, scroll down, and select the city-level location option.

5. Refresh your location.
On the other hand, sometimes you really want your location to be exact. When you visit the Nearby tab or want to tag your post with a location, Google Buzz will try to get your location using your phones GPS. If youre not happy with the location accuracy, youre moving, or youre just stepping outside to get a GPS signal, hit the refresh icon to tell the Google Buzz web app to get your location again. You can also learn more about troubleshooting location problems.

Beauty On the Outside High Replication on the Inside

Today we launched Google Art Project in collaboration with 17 of the world’s most renowned museums. Google Art Project is built on top of App Engine and lets you take virtual tours of famous museums using internal Street View technology, view high resolution images of famous art work, and create personal virtual artwork collections.

When Art Project started development several months ago, the team built the application using Java and the Master/Slave Datastore. However, as their launch date approached, we released the new High Replication Datastore configuration. With a scheduled maintenance period so soon after the site’s launch, they decided to switch over to the High Replication Datastore.

Before switching, they ran a load test to set a performance baseline for comparison after the application’s data was migrated. Now that the application has launched, we wanted to share the results of the test with you as an example of what to expect after a switch to the High Replication Datastore. Below are the mean numbers for latency of different parts of the site.

Here’s a description of what each page does behind the scenes:

Homepage: This is the landing page that just serves a static webpage for site navigation. Since this page does not pull information from the datastore, the latency is stable.

Collections: Art Project lets users create individual museum collections. These load tests specifically targeted adding and deleting paintings from a user’s personal collection, as well as rendering those collections. We notice the slightly increased latency from saving and deleting entities in the datastore.

Level Maps: These pages simply performed get() calls on the datastore using entity keys. Latency on these pages is consistent across instances.

Info Spots: This handler performs the most data intensive calculations of all of the handlers. It calculates all line of sight interest points for a user’s map position in a museum gallery room, and saves the points of interest to the datastore for that location. The good news is, this calculation doesn’t have to happen for every user. Once this data has been calculated for a given spot, it can re-used for other visitors to the site.

As you can see, while there was some increased latency when switching to the High Replication datastore, the site latency is still very low. And the migration required no major code changes and no modification to the datastore structure between the two load tests.

For more information about the High Replication Datastore, see the Datastore documentation. The next scheduled maintenance period for the Master/Slave datastore is February 7th, 2011 from 5pm - 6pm PST. The High Replication datastore and Google Art Project will not need to be read-only during this period. On the High Replication Datastore, your application won’t need to be either.

1 6 6 SDK Released

While the Search API was a feature that was just so exciting we couldn’t wait to share it, we still have our regularly scheduled release for May full of new offerings, fixes and refinements with a little something for everyone.

Search API

For the Search API, we’ve included a change that displays the current experimental quota limits in the Admin Console. Weve also made several bug fixes and small naming changes in the API to improve consistency.

Service Refinements

As a result of the Master/Slave datastore deprecation, new users will no longer be able to create new Master/Slave applications. We strongly suggest that developers move their existing Master/Slave applications to HRD.

Feature Updates

We are always looking for ways to remove our system limits so that developers can get the most out of the App Engine platform. With this release, apps that have billing enabled can now configure up to 100 cron jobs.

Lastly, we will be prompting a small percentage of admin console users each week to participate in an optional user satisfaction survey.

Of course, we can’t get to all the new things we have for you here, so don’t forget to read the full release notes for Python, Java, and Go. Stack Overflow for App Engine is an amazing way to get technical help from the community and members of the App Engine team, and we continue the lively discussion about App Engine over on our Google Group.

The new Cloud Console designed for developers

In June, we unveiled the new Google Cloud Console, bringing together all of Google’s APIs, Services, and Infrastructure in a single interface. Across Google, we want to make sure that you have an easy way to work and build across all of our platforms. That’s why we’re focusing on improvements to the Cloud Console so you can get things done faster.

We’re introducing a new navigation bar, making it easier to switch between pages. The new bar is designed to automatically resize- expanding sections as you need them and collapsing them when you don’t.

Our URL design got some love as well. In addition to being user-visible, URLs are useful permalinks to specific views for bookmarking and sharing. We’ve heard this feedback from several developers, and our response is our new RESTful, human-readable URL structure.

There are changes behind the scenes as well. The Google Cloud Console is implemented on Google App Engine, and as of this redesign we are now using Angular JS as well. App Engine makes it easy for us to build a RESTful, autoscaling backend to power our app, and Angular JS makes it simple to communicate with our backend to dynamically render content in the frontend.

This refresh is a first step towards improving your experience, and we are just getting started. Going forward, we’re working on a set of design standards and shared components that we’ll adopt throughout all of our services in the console. We’re also continually running user studies to study common developer workflows to see how we can improve them. If you would be interested in participating in any of these studies, please sign up here.

Nokia will make a major announcement in Delhi on May 9

Nokia will hold a major announcement in New Delhi on May 9. The Finnish manufacturer sent out invitations calling for a "time to shift gears".

Curiously, Nokias Indian announcement precedes the company’s scheduled Lumia event in London by five days. The latter will likely be the place where the companys next Windows Phone flagship will break cover.

Theres no word on the subject of Nokias New Delhi announcement. Our guess is that it might be one or more new members of the Asha family, as it is quite popular in India.
